Guided Backcountry Skiing in the Sea to Sky and Beyond
Aurora Backcountry guides backcountry skiing and ski touring in the Sea to Sky, from Squamish to the Duffey Lake area. Beyond the Sea to Sky, we run road trips to Rogers Pass and to Banff National Park. ACMG-certified guides lead every day, and all our guides have 10+ years of experience. We guide from December 1 to April 30.
The Sea to Sky: Squamish, Whistler and the Duffey Lake area
Most of our guiding is in the Sea to Sky: the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, Whistler, and the Duffey Lake area past Pemberton.
Whistler is our main area. Read our Whistler backcountry skiing guide.
And beyond: road trips to Rogers Pass, Banff and Lake Louise
We also run road trips into the Interior, usually from January to April. We go to Rogers Pass, and to Banff National Park to ski around Lake Louise. Road trips are three days or longer.
Road trips are built for guests coming from Vancouver and the coast. The Aurora van usually comes too, and you can ride it from Squamish or Whistler. You usually book your own lodging. You will find out where the crew stays as you plan with your group and guide. Road trips have extra costs: a daily charge for the van, and a nightly charge toward the guide’s hotel and travel.
If you live in Calgary, Banff or Revelstoke, you can join a road trip when one runs near you. Book a day on it, or buy a pass and use it on the trip. Trip dates are on the calendar.
How a guided backcountry ski day works
Your guide sets the logistics for each day. Install the Aurora app before your day. Your guide adds the meet points to the app, and you tap one to get directions. You can use the Aurora shuttle, and people in the Aurora community often carpool.
We always keep one guide for every six guests. Mixed groups and more technical objectives also get a tail guide.
Our days suit solid intermediate skiers and snowboarders, or better.
No tracks, no people
Our ethos in every area: no tracks, no people. We choose each objective up to 48 hours ahead, to fit the weather and conditions. On the day, your guide picks the exact terrain based on the group, the avalanche hazard and the snow.
